U.S. defence secretary Ashton Carter, who arrived in the capital on Monday from Goa, will hold delegation-level talks with his Indian counterpart Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday, following which the outcome of the deliberations will be disclosed.Indian ports stand to gain more revenue with India and the USA finalizing a defense logistics agreement that will allow the two nations to provide support to each other’s fighter planes, warships and personnel.”In this context, Secretary Carter and I agreed, in principle, to conclude a Logistic Exchange Memorandum of Agreement in the coming months”, Parrikar said.Washington has been persuading New Delhi to sign a Logistics Support Agreement that would let the two states use each other’s land, air and naval bases for resupplies, fix and rest.US leaders have long hoped to partner more with India as it modernizes its military, but Indian leaders have been more interested in co-development opportunities than in simply buying American-made weapons.The US Defense Secretary expressed his gratitude to Parrikar and the Government of India for their support in facilitating the recovery effort. While India never wanted to be closely identified with any country in its pursuit of strategic interests, it can not also overlook the growing symmetry between its own “look east policy” and USA interest in Asia. Indo-US defence ties were going to be “defining relationship of 21st century”, he said.India’s military is planning to develop a third aircraft carrier that will be built in India by 2028, according to a senior Indian defense official.New Delhi also conveyed its concern over the sale of F-16 fighter jets by the USA to Pakistan.Carter said some of the developing military technology agreements are “unique to India” and based on “complete trust”.
