Ethiopia-Djibouti Railway is a young transport operator, starting operations in 2018, and achieving significant results in bringing down the turnaround from three days to 14 hours, winning them the Transport Operator of the Year Award at this years, Africa Rail, Transport Awards. Mebratu Delelegn, OCC, Director for the Ethio-Djibouti railway explains in more detail.
The Ethiopia-Djibouti electric railway built to Chinese standards has created significant developments along the line, creating additional jobs and improving the tourism sector.
The line is the main artery for Ethiopia, over 90% of the imports and exports are now handled by this line.
The Ethiopian Railway plan is to build an additional 5000km, 1350km are currently under construction. Yehualaeshet Jemere, Deputy Chief Executive Officer – Rail Network Division of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation – talks about the new planned projects, feasibility studies and integrated transport such as BRT.
There are opportunities for international suppliers and South African suppliers, to engage and tender.
